ATLANTA – GOVERNING magazine has selected Georgia as the host state for its 2009 Managing Performance Conference (tentatively scheduled for September 30 – October 2). The conference will include executive forums and a series of peer-to-peer plenary and breakout sessions focusing on new and innovative solutions and best practices in policy and public management.

“This is a significant opportunity for Georgia as we continue to push towards our goal of ‘Best Managed State’ in the nation,” said Governor Perdue. “As the host state for GOVERNING’s Managing Performance Conference, Georgia gains the distinct advantage of bringing the best in state and local government to Georgia’s current and emerging leaders.”

“Managing Performance focuses on the practical challenges facing today’s state and local government leaders,” said Beth Bronder, publisher of GOVERNING. “Georgia has demonstrated a sustained commitment to improving government management and enhancing public service. We look forward to a dynamic 2009 program that fosters in-depth information sharing, education and relationship building centered on improving government performance.”

The Pew Center on the States and GOVERNING ranked Georgia among the best-managed states in the nation in the 2008 Grading the States special report. Georgia’s overall grade of B+ is the highest awarded to any state in the Southeast. The 2008 management report card emphasized the value and impact of improvements made by the Governor’s Commission for a New Georgia, an initiative Governor Perdue launched shortly after being sworn-in as Governor in 2003. The Commission for a New Georgia is an independent council of top-level executives from all parts of Georgia, which acts as a “real-world consultant” to state government on management and performance.

GOVERNING provides intelligence and analysis on management, policy and politics to help guide and inspire innovative leaders across state and local government. Its audience―in print, online and in-person― includes governors, mayors, legislators, local council members, program directors, agency heads, CIOs, policy advisors and other senior governmental officials.
