Thursday game against Alabama to be televised on ESPN
ATLANTA – Nearly 50 years ago, Governor Sonny Perdue crouched behind home plate as a catcher for the Warner Robins American Little League team. Tomorrow night, he will tune in to ESPN at 8 p.m. as the Warner Robins American Little League team takes on Westside Little League of Mobile, Alabama. The winner of the game, being played in St. Petersburg, Florida, earns a spot in the Little League World Series as the Southeast Region representative.
“After watching Columbus Northern take the title last year, I am proud that another Georgia team is in the hunt for a championship,” said Governor Perdue. “I was honored to wear the Warner Robins jersey years ago, and these boys have made us proud with the way they have represented their community and our state.”
Governor Perdue expressed confidence in his hometown team by offering up a gallon of North Georgia’s finest, 100 percent locally mountain-grown headwaters to Alabama Governor Bob Riley if Westside is able to pull off an upset victory.
“I am pulling for our home town team just as strongly as I am pulling for our right to protect Georgia’s water resources,” Governor Perdue said.
The Warner Robins American team is a perfect 4-0 so far in the Southeast Regional finals. After going 3-0 in pool play, including a 6-5 win over Alabama, Warner Robins defeated SYA East Little League of Centreville, Virginia, last night 3-2 in the Southeast Regional semifinal.
The 2007 Little League World Series will be held in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, from August 17-26.
